5 Romances On Netflix That Will Take Your Breath Away

Since Bradley Cooper and Lady Gaga’s rendition of A Star Is Born is slated for an October release, we know you are dying just as much as we are to see if sparks will fly between them on the big screen. Until then, why not indulge in other great romantic dramas this summer, courtesy of Netflix.

Quite frankly, this has been a rather slow, simmering summer at the box office and we couldn’t be more grateful for the chance to finally turn up the heat and find true love (or, at least something like it) on the small screen. These are the top 5 romances Netflix has to offer, and they will surely quench your thirst for some summer lovin'.

1. A Star Is Born (1976)

Starring: Barbra Streisand, Kris Kristofferson

1976's A Star Is Born does not disappoint — it stars freaking Barbra Streisand, after all!

The movie follows John (Kris Kristofferson), a fading, alcoholic rock star who discovers a "no name" club singer named Esther (Barbra Streisand). John uses his star power to give Esther the opportunity to step into the spotlight and find success. As John continues on his downward spiral of alcohol and drug abuse, Esther only gains more fame and the two fall in love. Can they overcome what pulls them apart?

Though 1976's A Star Is Born stars the one and only Barbra Streisand, it is not an "original" story. It is, however, an original take on a story that's embedded deep in Hollywood's DNA. The first incarnation of A Star Is Born debuted in 1937 and starred Janet Gaynor, followed by the 1954 version, which starred the legendary Judy Garland.

What we've come to understand is this: Bradley Cooper and Lady Gaga's incarnation of A Star Is Born will closely follow the Streisand version, in the same way Garland's closely followed the Gaynor version. Coincidence? I think not.

2. Atonement (2007)

Starring: Keira Knightley, James McAvoy

Based on the book by Ian McEwan, Atonement is that period drama we just love to indulge in when we want to stay out of the scorching summer heat.

This is the story of Cecilia Tallis (Keira Knightley) who falls madly in love with Robbie Turner (James McAvoy), the son of one of the Tallis family's groundskeeper. After a horrible event occurs during a family gathering, Cecilia's younger sister Briony — exquisitely played by a very young Saoirse Ronan — constructs a story that pins the event on Robbie, splitting the two lovers apart.

As the film progresses, Atonement finds ways to break your heart and forces you to understand the power outsiders can have on love. When Cecilia and Robbie finally cross paths again during World War II — inevitably changed by the world that forced them apart — you can't help but wish they could have the love story they deserve.

3. Before Midnight (2013)

Starring: Ethan Hawke, Julie Delpy

In Before Midnight, the final installment of Richard Linklater's Before Trilogy — which includes Before Sunrise (1995) and Before Sunset (2003) — we find longtime lovers Jesse (Ethan Hawke) and Celine (Julie Delpy) enjoying the last night of their vacation in Greece, attempting to understand themselves and the roles they have played in their eighteen-year relationship.

What's absolutely marvelous about Before Midnight, is that it can stand alone — it sweeps you away into a relationship that's endured the ins and outs of time and still compels you to believe in the strength and bond that love creates between two people. What's even more remarkable, is that the creation of Linklater's Before Trilogy spans over eighteen-years — from 1995 to 2013 — allowing audiences to see Jesse and Celine age and develop on-screen right along with the actors who portray them.

4. Newness (2017)

Starring: Nicholas Hoult, Laia Costa

For better or worse, Newness is a modern day romance fit for the times we live in. It takes place in Los Angeles, as two millennials (Nicholas Hoult and Laia Costa) attempt to navigate the world of dating-app culture.

As Martin and Gabi's relationship starts to develop, they can't help but find themselves lured away from each other by the promise of what else is out there. (Sounds familiar, I know!) They explore what it means to be together and fall incomprehensibly in love, while also desiring all that can be found on their smartphones. While watching this film, you can't help but wonder if sometimes the only way to connect is to disconnect.

5. Breakfast at Tiffany's (1961)

Starring: Audrey Hepburn, George Peppard

There is no way we can talk about all the romances on Netflix without including the one and only Audrey Hepburn on our list!

Not only is Breakfast at Tiffany's an iconic film, but it made a jewelry brand synonymous with true love and romance. When we think about love, we can't help but think about Tiffany & Co. — the Tiffany blue box — and all the eternal love we're promised should a gift or two from there appear in our lives.

Based on Truman Capote's best-selling novella of the same name, Breakfast at Tiffany's follows Holly Golightly (Audrey Hepburn), a single New York City girl determined to marry a millionaire. When Paul (George Peppard), a writer, moves into her building, they can't help but make a connection due to their lot in life. As they grow closer, Holly must decide if it's money or true love she really wants.

Sigh.
